How to Write a Good Résumé?

Let’s start with an interesting case

Imagine you are the HR manager of Deloitte LLP, a leading auditing firm.

You are looking to hire an Audit Executive to perform the following responsibilities

  1. Assist Audit Senior/Manager in carrying out the audit

  2. Follow up with clients on audit & related issues

Job Requirements:

  1. Diploma in Accountancy/Business Management/Finance

  2. Possess good command of English

  3. Meticulous in carrying out the assignments

  4. Prior audit internship experience will be an added advantage

Now, let’s critique!

First Candidate: Darren Lee Zhi Xi

  1. Language is perfect; there are no grammatical errors

  2. Shows that he possesses a strong command of the English language

  3. Includes relevant job experience

  4. Provides substantial details about the nature of his role that is very similar to the responsibilities of the job he is applying to i.e. assist Audit Senior/Manager in carrying out the audit & follow up with clients on audit & related issues

  5. Uses a high-resolution, professional-looking photograph

  6. Uses a professional-sounding email address

  7. A brief personal statement that shares about his skills and traits useful for the role

Second Candidate: Carrie Li Mei

  1. Makes simple language errors

  2. Does not possess a good command of the English language

  3. Provides irrelevant job experience information such as working as a barista

  4. Does not show her competencies

  5. She assisted the Audit Senior/Manager in simple tasks instead of audit & related issues

  6. Shows tactlessness and selfishness through her career objectives

  7.  Talks about self-enrichment instead of how she can contribute to the company and the role

  8. Contradicts the traits required for the role

  9. Talks about working fast so that she can go home early

  10. She is most likely not a meticulous employee

  11. A bad photograph

  12. A comical email address

  13. Inconsistent font sizes & capitalisation e.g. Job Experience compared to other headings

  14. Shows that she is not meticulous again
